Play Sand Safety
Overview
Aotearoa New Zealand Association for Play Therapy (ANZAPT) is urging their members as well as all child centered play therapists and play therapists across the country to exercise caution following recent reports that some batches of play sand sold in New Zealand and Australia may contain asbestos-contaminated material.
While investigations are still underway, ANZAPT emphasises that any potential asbestos exposure—especially for tamariki—must be treated with utmost seriousness.
Play therapy relies on safe, predictable materials. The possibility that children may have been exposed to asbestos fibres through play sand is deeply concerning. Until full testing is completed, we advise all practitioners, educators, and families to check the source of their sand and follow official safety recommendation.

What to do
ANZAPT recommends the following actions while investigations continue:
- Identify the source of any play sand currently in use (brand, batch number, supplier).
- Stop using any sand that cannot be verified as safe, pending further testing.
- Avoid disturbing or sifting sand that may be contaminated, as this increases risk of airborne fibres.
- Store questionable sand in sealed containers or bags until official guidance is issued.
- Seek asbestos testing through accredited laboratories if concerned.
- Follow guidance issued by Worksafe NZ, the Ministry of Health, EPA, or the Australian equivalents. Add a key service or product group
